He wanted reform but got the Reformation. Will Islam one day be similarly modernized?

When an obscure German monk hammered his indictments to the door of All Saints’ Church at Wittenberg on Oct. 31, 1517, he did not intend to impugn the authority of the Catholic Church, or malign its leaders, or rupture the spiritual unity of medieval Europe…

Jerry: The book you recommend above is no longer taken as an authoritative account of Martin Luther, other than by a small fringe of present-day Catholics. New scholarship over the past several decades has emerged. Assuming your intentions are sincere, a number of us Catholics have found the below blog to be a good jumping off point for current scholarship re Luther the man. The good and the bad.

    Mr. Loconte,

I just read your article on Martin Luther. I have to say it is amazing how historians or so call Dr.s of theology fail to read the real Church history, not OPINIONS of Church history. Martin Luther’s so called reformation was NOT based on indulgence’s. Yes it was an excuse used by the very people that wanted to live a life on earth that would be free of Church judgement. That means, they wanted to live a life of moral corruption with the approval of the Church’s teachings, indulgence’s were their cover! If you look at the progression of Protestantism you would surely find the real reason. Yes SOME bad priests sold indulgence’s, but it was never a teaching! If anyone in FAITH contributed to the building of St.Peter’s church, YES, they would be awarded an indulgence, because in FAITH, they were part of all the souls that would come to THAT church and CONVERT (turn away from sin) and TRY to live as Jesus’s requested. So yes that BUILDING was part of the conversion and therefor everyone that helped build that Church in FAITH would be part of that souls conversion and JESUS said they would be credited for that and many sins would be forgiven.
As for Luther, and King Henry, the real reason is in History for you to read. Did you bother to explore Luther life before he became a monk?, during his catholic time? and as leader of the King Henry church? The fruit will bear the proof! I suggest you read a great book on Luther, that is NOT opinion, but gives you the actual documents, location of them, and in Luther’s own hand writing.http://www.amazon.com/Facts-About-Luther-Patrick-OHare/dp/0895553228

If your title of Dr. is to be accepted as legitimate, please tell the whole story and let the people decide, or you become part of the DIVISION since the reformation. I expect more from Kings college.
